The Classic "Adaptogen": Ginseng

Post time: 2026-08-07

Consumer demand for functional health ingredients is expanding from dietary supplements into mainstream applications such as food, beverages, and personal care, fueling rapid growth in the ginseng extract market. According to an FMI report, the global ginseng extract market is projected to reach $12.3 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.4% from 2026 to 2036; China is expected to lead the global market with a growth rate of 6.2% by 2036.

Ginseng is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the *Panax* genus of the Araliaceae family; it is primarily cultivated in Northeast my country. Its root is a prized traditional medicinal herb valued for its ability to replenish *qi* and nourish the blood, strengthen heart function, and calm the spirit. Due to its diverse nutritional components and pharmacological properties, it has long been hailed in my country as the "King of Herbs" and is widely recognized as an "adaptogen." Texts such as the *Shennong Bencao Jing* and the *Bencao Gangmu* document its efficacy in nourishing *yin* and blood, strengthening the stomach, and replenishing *qi*.

Based on processing methods, ginseng is categorized into three types:

①Fresh ginseng refers to fresh ginseng roots that have not undergone processing after harvesting;

②White ginseng is produced by sun-drying fresh ginseng, and its surface is pale yellowish-white;

③Red ginseng consists of the dried roots and rhizomes of fresh ginseng that have been steamed, it has a translucent reddish-brown surface and a firm texture.

Key Active Ingredients in Ginseng Extract

√ Ginsenosides

√ Ginseng polysaccharides

√ Amino acids and trace elements

Core Functions

• Antioxidant: Research indicates that ginsenosides can enhance the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, maintain mitochondrial functional homeostasis, inhibit the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and regulate multiple signaling pathways, thereby playing a significant role in delaying aging and providing neuroprotection.

• Alleviating fatigue: Ginsenosides, ginseng polysaccharides, and proteins serve as the core active substances for combating fatigue. They synergistically alleviate physical weakness and fatigue through multiple mechanisms: regulating carbohydrate metabolism, enhancing mitochondrial energy supply efficiency in skeletal muscle, activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, and accelerating the scavenging of free radicals in the body.

• Immune Modulation: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 227 healthy adults demonstrated that 12 weeks of continuous supplementation with standardized ginseng extract significantly boosted natural killer (NK) cell activity and influenza vaccine antibody titers, while reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections by 64%. These findings confirm ginseng's efficacy in strengthening the body's immune defense.
