Introduction

Reishi is the dried fruiting body of the fungi Ganoderma lucidum or Ganoderma sinense (family Polyporaceae). The fruiting body is mushroom-shaped, consisting of a pileus (cap) and a stipe (stem). The pileus is mostly reniform, semicircular, or nearly circular, typically 10-18 cm in diameter and up to 2 cm thick. Its surface is reddish-brown (for G. lucidum) or purplish-black to nearly black (for G. sinense), exhibiting concentric ring-like ridges and radial wrinkles, and is covered with a distinctive lacquer-like sheen. The texture is hard and woody; the fractured surface appears pale brown to brownish. It has a faint, aromatic odor and a bitter, slightly astringent taste.
