Introduction

Kudzu Root is the dried root of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi (family Fabaceae). The root is long cylindrical, often cut obliquely or longitudinally into thick slices of varying length, with a diameter of 5-10 cm. The outer surface is grayish-brown or grayish-yellow, rough, with longitudinal wrinkles, and occasionally retains patches of light brown cork. The cut surface is yellowish-white to light brown, coarse, and highly fibrous, showing distinct alternating layers of fibers and starchy tissue. Transverse sections reveal concentric rings formed by fibers (resembling "growth rings"), while longitudinal sections show alternating streaks of fibers and starchy matter. The texture is hard, heavy, and not easily broken. It has a faint odor and a sweet, mild taste.
