Introduction

Giant Knotweed is the dried rhizome and root of Reynoutria japonica Houtt. (family Polygonaceae). The rhizome is cylindrical, often branched, varying in length, with a diameter of 0.5-2.5 cm. The surface is brownish to greyish-brown, exhibiting distinct longitudinal wrinkles, rootlet scars, and dotted lenticels. The nodes are slightly swollen and often bear remnants of membranous ocreae. The texture is hard and not easily broken. The fractured surface shows a thin, brownish bark that readily separates from the wood. The wood is broad, yellowish-brown to pale yellow, with distinct radial striations. The pith is often partitioned or hollow. It has a faint odor and a slightly bitter, astringent taste.
