Introduction
Dong Quai (Chinese Angelica Root) is the dried root of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (family Apiaceae). The root is somewhat cylindrical, with several branches at the lower part, measuring 15-25 cm in length and 1.5-4 cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish-brown to brown, exhibiting longitudinal wrinkles and numerous transverse, elongated lenticel-like protrusions. The crown is enlarged, up to 3.5 cm in diameter, with remnants of leaf sheaths and stem bases. The main root is thick and short, while the lateral roots are slender and long. The texture is pliable and easily broken. It has a strong, characteristic aroma and a taste that is sweet, pungent, and slightly bitter.
