Introduction

Codonopsis Root is the dried root of Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf. (family Campanulaceae). The root is long cylindrical, slightly curved, measuring 10-35 cm in length and 0.4-2 cm in diameter. Its surface is yellowish-brown to greyish-brown, rough, with numerous irregular longitudinal furrows and wrinkles, as well as transverse or dotted raised lenticels. The texture is somewhat hard or slightly flexible and easily broken. The fracture is flat, exhibiting cracks or a horn-like appearance. The bark is pale yellowish-white to light brown, and the wood is pale yellow with a distinct cambium ring. It has a faint, sweet aroma and a sweet taste, leaving no residue when chewed.
