Introduction

Schisandra Chinensis is the dried ripe fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. (family Schisandraceae). The fruit is irregularly spherical or oblate, 5-8 mm in diameter. The surface is red, purplish-red, or dark red, wrinkled, and slightly glossy with an oily sheen. The seeds are reniform (kidney-shaped), 4-5 mm long and 3-4 mm wide. Their surface is yellowish-brown, smooth, and glossy. The seed coat is thin and brittle; the kernel is white and oily. The texture of the fruit is pliable. The flesh has a faint odor and a sour taste. When crushed, the seeds release an aromatic odor and taste pungent and slightly bitter. The berry as a whole presents multiple flavors—sweet, sour, pungent, bitter, and salty—hence its name "Wu Wei Zi" (Five-Flavored Seed).
