Introduction
Astragalus Root is the dried root of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao or Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. (family Fabaceae). The root is cylindrical, rarely branched, thicker at the upper end, measuring 30-90 cm in length and 1-3.5 cm in diameter. The surface is pale brownish-yellow or pale brown, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles or furrows. The texture is hard yet pliable, not easily broken. The fracture is strongly fibrous and starchy. In old roots, the center may occasionally appear decayed, dark brown, or hollow. It has a faint odor and a slightly sweet taste, with a bean-like smell when chewed.
