Introduction

Burdock Root is the dried root of Arctium lappa L. (family Asteraceae). The root is long cylindrical, slightly curved, measuring 15-40 cm in length and 0.5-2 cm in diameter. Its surface is grayish-brown or brown, rough, with distinct longitudinal wrinkles and numerous dotted lenticels. The outer bark is easily peeled off, revealing a pale yellowish-white to grayish-white interior. The texture is firm yet easily broken. The fracture is flat, showing a narrow, pale brown bark and a broad, yellowish-white wood with distinct annular rings (growth rings) and radial fissures. It has a faint odor and a slightly bitter taste, becoming somewhat mucilaginous upon prolonged chewing.
