Introduction

White Peony Root is the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (family Ranunculaceae), processed by removing the outer bark, boiling, and then sun-drying. The root is cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, measuring 5-18 cm in length and 1-2.5 cm in diameter. The surface is whitish or pale brownish-red, smooth, occasionally showing longitudinal wrinkles and traces of the removed dark brown cork layer (known as “bark-pitted root”). The texture is solid and heavy, not easily broken. The fracture is even and flat, whitish or slightly brownish-red, with a distinct cambium ring. The wood exhibits distinct radial striations (referred to as “chrysanthemum heart”). It has a faint odor and a slightly bitter, sour taste.
