Schisandra is the dried, mature fruit of the plant *Schisandra chinensis* (Turcz.) Baill. (family Magnoliaceae)—commonly known as "mountain Sichuan pepper" or "medicinal Schisandra." First recorded in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Classic of Herbal Medicine), it is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of use. Its pulp and skin are sweet and slightly sour, while the seeds are pungent and bitter; the fruit as a whole is slightly salty, earning it the name "Schisandra" (literally "five-flavor fruit") because it encompasses all five flavors.
