Schisandra: A traditional herbal ingredient for nourishing body and mind

Post time: 2026-06-12

By 2025, the national cultivation area for Schisandra reached 187,000 mu, with an annual dried fruit output of approximately 34,000 tons; the industry has seen steady growth, making it one of the fastest-growing categories of specialty traditional Chinese medicinal herbs in the country.

Schisandra is the dried, mature fruit of the plant *Schisandra chinensis* (Turcz.) Baill. (family Magnoliaceae)—commonly known as "mountain Sichuan pepper" or "medicinal Schisandra." First recorded in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Classic of Herbal Medicine), it is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of use. Its pulp and skin are sweet and slightly sour, while the seeds are pungent and bitter; the fruit as a whole is slightly salty, earning it the name "Schisandra" (literally "five-flavor fruit") because it encompasses all five flavors. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, Schisandra possesses medicinal properties such as astringency (promoting the retention of bodily essences) and the ability to tonify the kidneys and calm the heart.

Active Ingredients

1.Lignans: Serving as key active constituents—exemplified by schisandrin and schisandrol—these compounds play significant roles in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, as well as in the modulation of the central nervous system.

2.Polysaccharides: Rich in over 17 types of amino acids and 16 trace elements, these compounds effectively boost the body's immunity and play a notable role in regulating gut microbiota.

3.Volatile oils: Accounting for approximately 5%–6% of the composition and found primarily in the fruit and seeds, these oils consist of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes and demonstrate outstanding benefits for liver protection and respiratory system health.

Application Areas

•Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Used as a raw material for producing proprietary Chinese medicines focused on liver protection, calming the mind, and general tonification.

•Health Foods: Can be processed into tablets, oral liquids, wellness teas, and other products; it serves as a key ingredient in anti-fatigue and immune-modulating dietary supplements.

•Food Processing: Frequently used to produce specialty foods such as fruit wines and candied fruits; it is also a source for extracting natural flavorings and food colorings.

•Personal Care & Beauty: Its extracts can be incorporated into anti-aging and reparative skincare products to provide soothing and skin-stabilizing benefits.
