Introduction

Siberian Ginseng is the dried root, rhizome, or stem of Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Harms (family Araliaceae). The rhizome is irregularly cylindrical, 1.4-4.2 cm in diameter, with a greyish-brown, rough surface exhibiting fine longitudinal wrinkles and dotted lenticels. The stem is cylindrical, up to 1 m long and 0.5-2 cm in diameter. Its surface is light grey to greyish-brown, marked with fine longitudinal grooves and densely covered with slender, downward-pointing prickles. On older stems, the prickles often fall off, leaving behind circular scars. The texture is light and brittle, easily broken. It has a faint, aromatic odor and a slightly pungent taste.
