Introduction

Chaga Mushroom is the dried sclerotium formed by the fungus Inonotus obliquus (family Hymenochaetaceae) as it parasitizes the trunks of living trees such as birch. Its appearance is irregular, tuberous, or massive, varying in size, typically 10-40 cm in diameter. The surface is extremely hard and rough, colored dark blackish-brown to charcoal black, and covered with deep, irregular, cracked furrows. The interior tissue ranges from yellowish-brown and brownish to deep brown. It has no distinct odor, a slightly bitter taste, and a somewhat woody, astringent sensation.
