Reishi Mushroom: The "Herb of Immortality" for Longevity

Post time: 2026-06-26

With the rise of public health awareness, the Reishi industry is experiencing rapid growth. Data from the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine indicates that the domestic Reishi market reached 21.5 billion RMB in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.8% over the past five years; health supplements accounted for 51% of the market and medicinal products for 39%, alongside steadily increasing demand for functional raw materials.

Reishi mushroom consists of the dried fruiting bodies of the polypore fungi *Ganoderma lucidum* (Red Reishi) and *Ganoderma sinense* (Purple Reishi). Typically growing on the decaying wood of broad-leaved trees, it features a glossy surface, a firm, wood-like texture, and a predominantly deep red color. Long celebrated as the "Herb of Immortality," it holds a significant place in traditional Chinese medicine culture as a prized, dual-purpose herb known for promoting longevity and strengthening the body's constitution.

Reishi contains over 400 natural active compounds, with polysaccharides and triterpenes being the most abundant and pharmacologically significant.

Reishi Polysaccharides: Found extensively in the fruiting bodies, mycelia, and spore powder, they offer antioxidant properties, boost immunity, and delay the aging process.

Reishi Triterpenes: Responsible for the mushroom's characteristic bitter taste, they provide multiple benefits, including liver protection, anti-inflammatory effects, blood lipid regulation, and calming/sedative properties.

Authoritative clinical data supports the synergistic antioxidant and anti-aging effects of these two key active components. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover human trial published in *Pharmaceutical Biology* in 2017 involved 42 middle-aged participants. Subjects were divided into groups to take either Reishi active extract capsules or a placebo daily for six months; blood samples were collected to assess relevant biomarkers and compare differences in antioxidant levels and oxidative damage.

The results demonstrated significant increases in the subjects' total antioxidant capacity (TEAC), levels of the endogenous antioxidant glutathione (GSH), and antioxidant thiol(Thiols) reserves; conversely, levels of markers associated with lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and oxidative DNA damage (8-OH-dG) decreased. The study confirms that *Ganoderma* polysaccharides and triterpenes work synergistically to alleviate oxidative stress and reduce cellular damage, thereby exerting anti-aging effects by comprehensively enhancing the body's antioxidant capacity.

Application Areas

• Food Ingredients: Leveraging its dual status as both food and medicine, it can be processed into Reishi tea, meal-replacement cookies, and Reishi powder, making it suitable for gentle, daily nourishment.

• Health Products: With a mature industry landscape, key product categories include broken-cell-wall spore powder, Reishi spore oil, and standardized Reishi extract capsules.

• Beauty and Skincare: Reishi extract offers excellent antioxidant and skin-repairing properties, making it widely used in skincare products such as serums and creams.

• Pharmaceutical and Functional Ingredients: It serves as an ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulations and is also added to various compound tonic preparations to address sub-health conditions such as physical weakness, fatigue, and restlessness.
